3 Tips to Help You Keep Your Vinyl Fence in Perfect Shape for a Long Time

Posted on: 10 June 2021

Many homeowners want to invest in a good fence to keep their property and loved ones safe. However, choosing the type of fence to install is sometimes tricky if you don't know some of the most suitable fencing materials you could use. Vinyl is perhaps one of the leading fencing materials that homeowners choose for their fencing project today.

But did you know you still have a lot to do on maintenance even after installing a vinyl fence? According to many fencing contractors, the durability and reliability of your vinyl fence depend on the maintenance offered. So, if you have installed a vinyl fence in your home, here are some of the maintenance tips you need to keep it functional and in perfect shape for many days.

Periodic Cleaning

It's advisable to periodically clean your vinyl fence if you want to use it for a long time. Vinyl fences don't get extremely dirty, but this doesn't mean you should overlook periodic cleaning. The dirt that gets stuck on the fence with time can compromise its durability and function in a big way.

For this reason, ensure you clean the fence as recommended by the fencing contractors, especially after a rainstorm. A household cleaner and water are all you need to clean the fence. You could also use a pressure washer, but ensure you don't use a high pressure since it could slowly weaken the fence.

Remove the Growing Mildew

Mildew can sometimes grow on the vinyl fence, especially during the rainy season. If you notice any mildew on the fence, remove it before it accumulates because it could end up damaging it. Mildew spreads quite fast, and if you are not careful, you might realise it when it's all over the fence. You can also use soft bristles because they are effective in removing mildew.

However, if you don't have soft bristles, you can also remove mildew using a gentle cleanser or soft cloth. If any of these methods doesn't work, use a certified eraser. Many people use erasers to remove the stubborn dirt and mildew on their vinyl fence. By so doing, your fence will look new and attractive.

Check for Signs of Weakness

A vinyl fence is sturdy and is designed to withstand inclement weather. However, this doesn't mean that its stability will not be compromised in some ways with time. Therefore, it's advisable to check the fence line, particularly after heavy rains, because the locking tabs of many vinyl fences get loose after extreme weather.

Usually, loose tabs cannot hold the posts and boards together again, weakening the entire fence. If the posts are loose, add more soil at the base and secure their locks. This way, your vinyl fence will be more stable. But if the fence continues to be weak even after strengthening it, contact a fencing contractor for help.

Choosing vinyl for your fencing project is a brilliant idea. However, it's good to know that installing a vinyl fence isn't everything. You also need to know how you could make it more functional and durable. With the above maintenance tips, the vinyl fence can serve you for many years.
